Using Strategic Planning to Sharpen Organizational Focus on its Mission
Challenge
Amid a divestiture from the Federal student load servicing business and a rebrand, Granite Edvance (formerly New Hampshire Higher Education Assistance Foundation, NHHEAF) was ready to focus on its core mission: counseling current and prospective in-state students on securing and managing educational loans. To guide that transition, Granite Edvance needed an organizational strategy to reflect this narrower focus and clearly define mission, articulate a vision, and establish goals.
The Case
Wanting to ensure its new vision reflected key organizational beliefs and the nonprofit’s narrower focus, DLG conducted individual interviews with the C-Suite and leadership team, as well as focus groups with select team members. Beyond developing a baseline of understanding, the exercise revealed several themes and early insights, which DLG used to facilitate a multi-day planning session with leadership. The output: redefined values, mission, and vision that reflect the organization’s goals through 2025.
As a new, leaner organization, one of the key bars for success on this engagement was making sure Granite Edvance employees at all levels saw themselves in this reimagined mission. To help champion its new focus, DLG worked with the CEO and key leadership members on effectively articulating and communicating this new vision with various constituencies.
