Providing Board Operations Support to Improve Performance and Drive Efficiency
Challenge
The William & Mary Law School Foundation is rapidly developing and maturing to meet the growing needs of the Foundation and its alumni. Foundation and Advancement staff are overtasked and unable to split efforts to complete day-to-day job responsibilities and added board management requirements. To enhance board engagement and reach Advancement fundraising goals, WMLSF needed fractional board operational support to plan and execute four annual board meetings, six committees and two working groups.
The Case
DLG conducted Trustee and staff interviews to learn the history and needs of the Foundation. In addition to taking the lead on the planning, execution and follow up for all board and committee/working group meetings, DLG created communication plans, annual calendars, clear Trustee roles & responsibilities, conducted committee evaluation and developed charters for five committees, launched a system to track board giving, and re-evaluated board training for new Trustees. To enhance board operations and efficiency and minimize confidentiality risks, DLG researched eight board management software platforms, assisted in the selection, implementation and training of a new system called OnBoard. DLG provided WMLSF with recommendations to strengthen board governance, document and data management, and how to strike a balance between Trustee vs. staff time commitments for Foundation related programs and projects.
